SOT, Menachem Haberman, Holocaust survivor (Hebrew): "In 1944 the Germans caved in already and in a few days they built two ghettos in the town of Mukachevo - there were more than 300,000 people and from that there were about 20,000 Jews and they built two ghettos. Let’s say in the whole town there were 50 streets, so they made a ghetto and it included 5 streets in one spot of the town and 5 streets from the other sides of the town and all the Jews that lived in the other 40 streets now had to enter the ghetto." *LOOSE TRANSLATION* *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*
SOT, Menachem Haberman, Holocaust survivor(Hebrew): "They put us into our house with two more families with around six, seven people. There were 25 or 26 people living in two rooms and also at that time when the Germans made the ghetto and at the end they built a ditch, we dug this ditch so the people wouldn't be able to get out of the ghetto and people from the outside would not be able to get inside to us." *LOOSE TRANSLATION*
SOT, Menachem Haberman, Holocaust survivor (Hebrew): "The other thing I wanted to tell you was that I had several jobs in Birkenau, in Auschwitz - one of my jobs was to clear the ashes from where they burned the Jews through a tunnel to a small river and I worked there together with another guy who was already old, he was 32 and I was 16. I didn't know what these ashes were. One day when I saw it in daylight I asked him - 'what is the job we are doing?' So he told me what it was. He asked me when did you arrive here? So I told him, 'Yesterday.' He asked, 'How many from the family,' so I said, 'My mother and seven kids,' because my sister had already been sent to Mengele. When we arrived Mengele sent her to the right side - those from the age 15-42 were sent to the right side and all the rest were to the left side." *LOOSE TRANSLATION*
SOT, Menachem Haberman, Holocaust survivor (Hebrew): "So I said in my head there is no way that I want my ashes here to be going towards that small river, I would do everything I could to stay alive. This is what kept me strong and also I believe that it is from above, as you say, 'God will help me' and this was the strongest thing that helped me to stay alive." *LOOSE TRANSLATION*
SOT, Menachem Haberman, Holocaust survivor (Hebrew): "The fact that now they are making a ceremony, a big ceremony with Putin and all the big people - that they are coming here to Yad Vashem - to Jerusalem and all that while they are doing it - they are doing it while the 75 years already passed, people have already forgotten about it. I'll never forget it. Me - I have a number here - every morning while putting on the tallit and tefillin, every day I see myself in Auschwitz." *LOOSE TRANSLATION*

As the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz death camp nears, Menachem Haberman provided his first-hand testimony to the horrors committed by the Nazis during the World War II, speaking to RT at his home in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Haberman was born in 1927 in Czechoslovakia and was 16 when he was sent to Auschwitz, where most of his family was murdered.
The Holocaust survivor recalled how one of his jobs in Auschwitz was to clear the ash of the burned Jews.
“So I said in my head there is no way that I want my ashes here to be going towards this small river, I would do everything I could to stay alive,” Haberman said.
“I'll never forget it. Me - I have a number here [Auschwitz prisoner number] - every morning while putting on the tallit and tefillin, every day I see myself in Auschwitz.”
After Buchenwald was liberated Haberman immigrated to Israel in 1950 and married Rivka, a Holocaust survivor from the Netherlands. They have three children and five grandchildren.
