Scientists discovered a protein that helps the heart repair itself in a breakthrough which could lead to new drugs to treat heart failure.
Unlike other organs, the human heart does not make many new cells over a lifetime even though it works tirelessly, beating billions of times as it grows old.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US, found that a protein called vinculin is responsible for keeping heart muscles pumping.
John Hopkins instructor Dr. Anthony Cammarato said the heart is very tough, but cannot regenerate, which means the organ's ability to pump blood declines as it ages.
He says scientists could use Vinculin to slow down the heart's decline.
