UK: 'Avoid overreaction' warns Chinese ambassador

SOT, Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the UK: "The WHO has reiterated that it disapproves of and is even against travel and trade restrictions on China. In recent days, the UK at the bilateral level has fully recognised China's tremendous efforts and effective measures in fighting the virus. It also expressed willingness to enhance co-operation with China, and do its best to assist China in these efforts. It is our hope that the governments of all countries, including the UK should understand and support China's efforts, respect the professional advice of WHO, avoid overreaction, avoid creating panic and ensure the normal co-operation and exchanges between countries."

The two governments maintain very close contact, (Foreign) Secretary (Dominic) Raab and Cabinet Secretary (Mark) Sedwill have a telephone conversation with our counterparts Director (unclear) and State Council and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. British side spoke highly of the prevention and control measures taken by China, and also offered to help and we appreciate that. So there's no such issue with regards to disappointment and displeasure and discontent in regard to British government response."

China's Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming answered questions about the coronavirus outbreak at a press conference in London on Tuesday.
Xiaoming warned against "overreaction" and "creating panic" as he urged for "the governments of all countries including the UK to understand and support China's efforts" to contain the spread of the flu-like virus. The ambassador added that "normal co-operation" between nations should prevail.
"Rumours and panic are more frightening than the virus itself," Xiaoming maintained.
"Confidence and determination are of vital importance in overcoming [the] epidemic. The issue of public health goes beyond national borders and requires the joint efforts of all sides including the media, who should take up their due social responsibility in this battle against a common enemy of mankind," he added.
The statement followed the UK government's travel advice that UK citizens able to leave China should do so.
An estimated 564 people have died and more than 24,000 people have been infected with the respiratory disease which originated in the Wuhan city in China late last December.
