Streets were deserted in Moscow on Monday on the first day after Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced strict measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Under the self-isolation order published by Sobyanin on Sunday, Muscovites can only leave their homes for a limited time to go to the nearest supermarket or pharmacy, as well as to walk pets, throw out the garbage or seek emergency medical care.
Earlier on Monday the mayor announced that President Vladimir Putin’s decision to give Russian citizens a week-long holiday would allow to radically tighten the self-isolation measures.
Russia saw its biggest daily increase in coronavirus cases on Monday, with 302 new coronavirus infections, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,836. Nine people have died from the virus, according to official figures.
