Russia: Libya and Russia 'understand each other well' says Marshal Haftar

29.11.2016
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (Arabic): "The role of Russia, and I am sure of this, corresponds to the level of the problems it solves. It defends our rights at the UN and raises its voice to support our rights. We are under sanctions, banning the import of weapons to us. This prohibition is unfair but I believe that here we are understood correctly that we are fighting against terror. And terror is the enemy of all mankind. We, thank God, are doing our duty with all the modest means we have and are getting closer to the destruction of this enemy."
Journalist (Arabic): "Do you use the Russian experience in the fight against terrorism, in Syria for example?"
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (Arabic): "I believe that our own experience is no smaller than any others because we learned what terror was before any other state. We say we are fighting against terror on behalf of the whole world. Today there are many of us who are fighting terrorism in the world and I believe that the exchange of experience in this field will help us to destroy it."
Journalist (Arabic): "How do you assess the political aspect of the role of Russia after meeting with Mr. Lavrov?"
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (Arabic): "Frankly, we understand each other very well including issues that are directly related to Libya. Thank you."
Journalist (Arabic): "One more question: tell us about the meeting with the Defence Minister?"
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (Arabic): "We were talking in general, I explained our position on the question of armaments and Russia, as a great power, understands the true course of things, understands the injustice of the sanctions taken against us. And perhaps it will prompt action in international law towards us, not as exceptions."
Journalist (Arabic): Did you ask Russia for something?
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar (Arabic): "We asked for nothing, we explained our position and wanted to understand the position of the other side. Nothing more. We are fighting against terror and will be done with it in our country."
Libyan National Army Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar said he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov “understand each other well” following their meeting in Moscow on Tuesday.
Asked about the countries' bilateral relationship Haftar said Russia had “raised its voice to support our rights,” and drew parallels between Libya and Russia’s fight against terrorism saying he believed “our own experience [in fighting terrorism] is no smaller than any others” and that “the exchange of experience in this field will help us to destroy it.”
Haftar called the sanctions imposed on Libya “unfair” and said that Russia “as a great power” understood “the injustice of the sanctions taken against us.”
Haftar was in Moscow for an official visit, his second of the year. His earlier visit to Moscow was in June, during which he met with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russian Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev.
