A press conference was held in Sredets on Friday following border police shooting dead an Afghani refugee who was trying to cross into Bulgaria from Turkey late on Thursday night. Kalina Chapkanova, Burgas' District Prosecutor said investigators found a firearm and an ammunition magazine missing one bullet at the scene of the incident. The incident happened near the south-eastern Bulgarian town of Sredets after more than 50 refugees, reportedly all from Afghanistan, had crossed into Bulgaria via Turkey. Late Thursday night the group met a patrol in Sredets Municipality. A man was shot after a police officer allegedly fired warning shots during scuffles in which a "ricocheted" bullet then hit him. The group numbering up to 50 was subsequently detained following the shooting. George Kostov, the Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, said that all the detainees were between "20 and 30 years old, defined themselves as Afghans and were all in a good physical shape."
